Calvarese: An referee’s whistle has very serious consequences

Here’s an excerpt from his statements, as reported by Claudia Santarelli on Bianconeranews.it:

“When a referee is ‘benched’ for a few weeks, this serves primarily to protect him from the media: a form of shielding from potential criticism, a way not to ‘burn him,’ not to further compromise him. But above all, to return to the top after a stop, the path is long. It starts from Serie B, continues with VAR, then with a few matches as the fourth official. It takes months to return to directing a mid-level Serie A match, even longer for a big match. Moreover, if a player doesn’t play for months, he continues to receive his salary from the club, while the same doesn’t happen for a referee, who stops receiving the substantial ‘fees’ paid for each match, suffering economic damage. Faced with these facts, every suspicion ignites: why make a ‘deliberate’ mistake if the consequences are so serious?”

All true, one might say.
However, if in the same match there are multiple serious errors, why does the AIA (Italian Football Referees’ Association) only point the finger at the one that disadvantaged Bologna? If this is the indication, the message that comes across is that the consequences that ‘are so serious’ await anyone who doesn’t whistle AGAINST Juventus. We believe that this communication is biased, unfair, intimidating, and can lead to an irreparable condition of BIAS and CONCERN in any referee who finds himself in charge of a Juventus game.

Last year the message was ‘it’s only the second game of the season, let’s stay calm.’ This year it’s ‘those who don’t whistle against Juventus will be out for months.’

Faced with the dramatic drop in ratings, the increasing tensions between fanbases, the obscene escalation of tones by commentators and pseudo-journalists, we note once again that the actions by the political bodies of football are decidedly questionable.

Until the end… but it’s only the beginning.”
